How does the mechanical seal pump work?

The mechanical seal is helpful to rotate the part of the shaft against the stationary segment of the pump housing. So the shaft is allowed to turn while maintaining a seal. Hence, it turns out to be extremely difficult for leakage to occur beyond vapor if the installation is done correctly in good condition. Lubrication and parallel faces are essential to a mechanical seal pump. In case the pump fails to supply adequate lift, a seal support system is implemented to generate a lubricating fluid. The front face of the seal usually contains a black carbon face.

What is a Mechanical Seal on a Pump?

The mechanical seals are devices that form a packing. The packing is formed between the rotor and the stationary segment of the centrifugal pumps. This is beneficial in preventing the leakage of the fluid after pumping. Every mechanical seal pump has five primary elements. They are:
  • A ring that circulates synchronously with the rotating shaft.
  • A secondary seal between shaft and ring.
  • A Stationary ring arranged in the stationary part.
  • A secondary seal between the parts.
  • Spring in the seal face.

Mechanical Seal in Pumps: Working Pattern

The mechanical seal pump aims at resolving old issues. They prevent the leakage of pumped fluid into the environment. Pump sealing technology is an active topic of research. All the leakage paths within the seals are blocked with the use of a gasket, o-ring, and wedge. The most significant aspect of a mechanical pump seal is to maintain the seal.

Springs are metal bellows that can be multiple in numbers. They are used to implement the required energy so that the seal faces are kept in together pressing. The seal faces receive a load which is further engineered into the seal itself. The selection of the best one is dependent on the temperature and nature of what is sealed.

Behind the aspect of an operation for mechanical seals lies the factor of rotating and stationary seal faces. They are lapped flat enough, so the liquid or gas can't flow through them. Further, the shaft can spin, and the mechanical maintenance of the seal goes on. Designs of different kinds are availed in the market that comes with a mechanical seal that is installed between the motor and the pump. This is generally preferred to decrease the volume of liquid, which serves the purpose of backflushing in slurry service. These are called slurry handling pumps with mechanical seals in it. The volume can be adjusted from 500ml to 100ml per day.

Thus mechanical seals serve the function of a check valve and slider bearing. The significant function of the seals is to prevent the liquid from venting out from the pump in case of high pressure. It also prevents air from entering into the pump when kept in a vacuum condition. The mechanical seal pump is just a simple method of having fluid in the vessel. Even there are double mechanical seals. There the seals are arranged in a series.
